In a compassionate move toward rehabilitation and empowerment, Carmel Jyothi Public Charitable Trust, in collaboration with Prison Ministry India, Gulbarga Diocese, organized a computer training program for the inmates of Kalaburagi Central Jail. The initiative, launched in July 2025, aims to equip 30 prisoners with essential computer skills, thereby increasing their chances of employment and self-reliance after release.
The program is sponsored by Carmel Jyothi Public Charitable Trust with a contribution of ₹30,000. It is designed as a three-month training course focused on practical computer education. This initiative reflects the Church’s commitment to social transformation, especially among the marginalized and the forgotten.
The inauguration ceremony was held within the jail premises and was attended by key dignitaries including Dr. Anitha, Chief Superintendent of Kalaburagi Central Jail; Fr. Deepak Thomas OCD, Superior of the Carmelite Fathers; Fr. William Miranda OCD, Director of Carmel Jyothi Public Charitable Trust; and Fr. Maxim SJ, Secretary of Prison Ministry India for the Gulbarga Diocese. During the inauguration, all 30 participating inmates were provided with T-shirts, notebooks, and pens as a token of encouragement and support for their journey of learning and personal growth.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Anitha emphasized the transformative power of such rehabilitation programs. She noted that skill-building initiatives like this not only reduce the chances of repeat offenses but also help former inmates to rebuild their lives and families with dignity and purpose. “Programs like this can play a crucial role in reducing crime and fostering peace in society,” she remarked.
This computer training program is more than just a technical course—it is a symbol of hope, renewal, and the Church’s mission of mercy. Through this initiative, Carmel Jyothi Public Charitable Trust and Prison Ministry India aim to help inmates rediscover their self-worth and prepare for a meaningful future. The Diocese of Gulbarga, through its social outreach arms, continues to be a beacon of light to those in the margins, working towards a society where everyone is given a second chance to live with dignity and peace.
