Fr. Santhosh Bapu Assumes Office as Vicar General with Solemn Oath

Kalaburagi, April 10, 2025 — In a solemn and spirit-filled ceremony held at Sugyan, the Pastoral Centre of the Diocese of Gulbarga, Rev. Fr. Santhosh Bapu officially assumed office as the new Vicar General of the Diocese. The event was presided over by Most Rev. Dr. Robert Miranda, Bishop of Gulbarga, and witnessed by priests, religious sisters, and diocesan staff who gathered in a spirit of unity, gratitude, and prayer.

In a symbolic moment of transition, Fr. Stany Lobo, the outgoing Vicar General, graciously handed over his responsibilities to Fr. Bapu. Following the handover, Fr. Santhosh Bapu took the Oath of Fidelity and Secrecy before the Holy Bible and the tabernacle, and professed the Creed. Bishop Miranda then presented him with the official letter of appointment and offered heartfelt words of blessing and encouragement for the journey ahead.

 Life Rooted in Service and Compassion

Fr. Santhosh Bapu was born on December 25, 1979, in Palahalli, Mandya District, and was ordained a priest on April 17, 2008, for the Diocese of Gulbarga. Known for his pastoral zeal and deep commitment to social causes, Fr. Bapu holds a Master’s degree in Sociology and a Diploma in Development Leadership from the renowned Coady Institute in Canada.

His dynamic ministry has included a wide range of pastoral and developmental roles. He has served as Director of ORBIT and Sevasangama, Director of Kristashram and Sacred Heart Mission in Aland, and Manager of St. Mary School, Aland. His leadership is marked by a hands-on approach and a tireless drive to uplift the marginalized.

One of his most notable contributions is the founding of SPARSHA, a home for children living with HIV. Under his guidance, more than 100 children have received not only shelter but a life of dignity and hope. This initiative remains a beacon of compassion in the diocese and beyond.

A Leader of the Church and Society

Fr. Bapu’s leadership extends into the governance of the Diocese, where he has actively served on the College of Consultors, the Council of Priests, and the Diocesan Pastoral Council. His holistic approach to ministry bridges the spiritual and the social, embodying the Church’s call to be present in all aspects of human life.

His selfless service is not limited to the Church. Fr. Bapu is a committed social worker and community leader. He has donated blood more than 30 times, is a registered eye donor, and actively participates in organizations such as the Rotary Club, Kannada Sahitya Parishat, Indian Red Cross Society, and the Bamboo Society of India.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions, he has been honored with several prestigious awards, including the Makkala Kalyana Award (2016) by the Government of Karnataka, the Kannada Rajyotsava Award (2015) in Humnabad, and the Blood Donor Award (2015) from DAPCU, Bidar.
