A vibrant spirit of leadership, awareness, and social responsibility came alive on May 23, 2026, during the impactful “Civic Spark” Camp jointly organized by Streevani, the Karnataka Domestic Workers Union, and the Labour Commission of the Diocese of Gulbarga.
The one-day camp brought together 60 enthusiastic children between the ages of 12 and 16, offering them a unique opportunity to understand urban governance, civic responsibility, and community participation through engaging and interactive sessions. The program focused on empowering children living in informal settlements by helping them understand the functioning of local government institutions and the importance of active citizenship. Participants were guided to identify key government offices and civic structures functioning within their communities.
A major highlight of the camp was the practical training on identifying civic problems such as sanitation issues, water supply concerns, and other local challenges affecting daily life. The children were also introduced to the formal process of drafting memorandums and petitions to local authorities, enabling them to confidently raise their voices for the welfare of their neighborhoods. The event also celebrated academic excellence. Students who secured 80% and above in their SSLC and PUC examinations were specially honored and appreciated for their hard work and dedication.
Adding joy and energy to the day, the camp included interactive games, quizzes, cultural activities, and dance sessions that kept the children actively engaged throughout the program. The “Civic Spark” Camp successfully blended civic education with creativity and participation, sowing the seeds of leadership and social awareness among the younger generation. The organizers expressed hope that these young participants would grow into responsible citizens and effective advocates for positive change in society.
